Why not sports?

Written by jabull on June 9, 2008 – 10:18 am -

A thought occurred to me yesterday about Christians and sports. For many years now I have watched the church take a stand against certain worldly activities and remove themselves from them while chastising those who do not. Good examples in my life have been secular music, movies, science and politics. I have certianly been a part of this as well. With good intentions we have wound up removing ourselves from culture and failed to be the salt and the light that the Bible tells us to be. The Bible is clear that we are to be in the world but not of the world and I think we have often confused the difference out of fear or lack of knowing the difference. We haven’t spent much time training up a new generation to be effective in these areas and create change. The irony that I considered in a conversation with friends yesterday is that we haven’t done the same thing in sports. We pat athletes on the back and encourage them to make a difference when they make it to the pros, but we tend to clobber a musician who would consider joining a secular music group to go on tour…

If Numbers Were Colors in Web 2.0 - the number 2

Written by jabull on June 7, 2008 – 11:42 am -

Today’s Web 2.0 number is 2, two, dos.. the number 2 is a bright olive green color. The olive green I’m referring to is not a military sort of green, although it could easily go that way if 2 got angry and became militant. I picture 2 as more of a bright glassy olive tone. Your wondering why number 2 is in the green slot? It’s simple, really… number 2 is not number 1. We all know that number 1 is a forever gloating “hey I’m up here on top and your all not..look at me” kind of a color. Therefore, number 2 always feels like less of a number. Two works hard to stay well spirited and tries to glow as best he can… hence the Web 2.0 glassy, shiny-ness, but because he always feels a deep sense of being in second place, the envy show through…just a little… leaving him green.

If Numbers Were Colors in Web 2.0 - the number 5

Written by jabull on June 7, 2008 – 7:00 am -

In my new Web 2.0 series I would like to discuss the close relation between numbers and colors. I know there will be offenses made. So I would like to apologize in advance to those I will offend with my color choices. I would also like to alleviate any concern for the hexadecimal system by stating ahead of time that no colors were hurt during any of my testing.

Today I would like to start with the number 5, Five, cinco… 5 is a blue color. Not blue in the sense of sad, depressed or lonely… that would be more of a navy. I like to think of 5 as more of a blue in terms of corporate colors. Think blue as in Microsoft, IBM and blue ribbons on apple pies at the county fair. Blue as in, “wow her eyes sure light up when I come through the door”.

If you don’t agree with my assessment of the number 5, leave a comment and we can discuss it.

Email from the Trenches #2 : Fundraising by selling ladies corsets?

Written by jabull on June 6, 2008 – 11:03 am -

My name is xxxx and I am the president of a ladies corset company. My company is Christian owned and operates in Mount Clemens, MI. I know church fundraising can be challenging. My company offers a free Partnership Program to help churches raise funds. Churches that partner with us receive an individual church code. When a customer purchases from us using the church code, the partner church receives 10% of the total purchase. The church only needs to let their congregations and supporters know about our partnership, give them the church code, our website address and phone. We will do the rest. Please review our website at: xxxx If you are interested in a partnership, click on the Site Map link and go to Partnership Application Form. Fill it out and submit it. I look forward to helping your church continue to spread the Word.

Ok, so I can see our youth group out selling ladies corsets to raise money for summer camp can’t you? Imagine spreading the word as you go door to door sharing the gospel message and inviting unsuspecting seekers to visit the ladies corset website on their home computers… good grief…

Asking the hard questions

Written by jabull on June 5, 2008 – 12:42 pm -

Life has hard questions..

  • Am I willing to ask the hard questions?
  • Have I made excuses on God’s behalf because I couldn’t answer the tough questions myself?
  • What are some areas of my life that I don’t yet trust God in… especially because I couldn’t resolve a tough question.

A New Kind of Me

Written by admin on June 5, 2008 – 12:11 pm -

I recently read through Brian McClaren’s “A New Kind of Christian” book and found it very thoughtful. I must admit that the book challenged many of my thinking patterns and the way that I handle my relationships. I may not have agreed with everything that Brian’s book is about, but i certainly caused me to take a deeper look at how modernism has affected my spiritual life and the relationships that I develop with others. I’ll be posting more my migration to a new version of me… since i’m still in beta.

Yelling at God

Written by admin on December 21, 2007 – 6:37 am -

I yelled at God this week.  I think He may have been yelling at me the last several months…. so a  few days ago I yelled back…. in fact it was more like a tantrum.  I guess all the Monday’s in my life ganged up on me at once and I had a breakdown… after words I could barely speak.. in fact it’s been several days and I’m still struggling with losing my voice. In all the hollering between God and I, apparently I damaged something.  I’ve read many times in the book of Psalms where David yelled at God…. theres a few places where It really sounded more like my tantrum.  Well, needless to say, God and I have things in perspective again…. I’ve decided to let him take care of running the world… and I’ll practice listening more. I’m sure glad that He’s big enough to take it, and love me the same when I was done.

Best lunch ever meets good book asp.net ajax in action

Written by admin on September 27, 2007 – 12:54 am -

Well, my beautiful 3rd grade daughter managed to suprise me with another hand made sack lunch this morning. Her reckless abandon and apparent disgregard for calorie intake, carbs and protein value is both exciting and concerning at the same time. Lunch today includes a PB&J sandwich, Pringles chips, string cheese, green apple, chocolate cupcake and a Capri Sun juice…. I plan to settle down at some point to enjoy it along with a good book, which just so happens to be Asp.Net Ajax in action by Allesandro Gallo, David Barol and Rama Krishna Vavilala.. I’ll keep you updated on the book, and more importantly the lunch.

Best lunch ever - Smarter Sheep award #2

Written by admin on September 25, 2007 – 9:25 pm -

Today I am having one of the best lunches ever, my beautiful third grade daughter inlcluded me in her school lunch making plans last night and left me a suprise this morning. On the menu for today is: PB&J sandwich, Lays classic chips, a golden apple and Capri Sun fruit punch with a straw. There also seems to be a signigicant measure of love placed into the whole thing that I could taste in the first bite of the PB&J sandwich that I’m sneaking a little early for breakfast at my desk this morning before my IT volunteers arrive. Thank you Lord for my kids, this is what life is really about. Today I have to give the Smarter Sheep award #2 to my daughter LilyAnne, for reminding daddy of how truly blessed that I am.
