National Day of Prayer

Seeking God for our City (Day 40) PALM SUNDAY

Seeking God for Christ to VISIT our communities with His presence and saving power.

1-2 God claims Earth and everything in it, God claims World and all who live on it. He built it on Ocean foundations, laid it out on River girders.3-4 Who can climb Mount God? Who can scale the holy north-face?  Only the clean-handed, only the pure-hearted; Men who won’t cheat, women who won’t seduce. 5-6God is at their side; with God’s help they make it. This, Jacob, is what happens to God-seekers, God-questers. 7 Wake up, you sleepyhead city! Wake up, you sleepyhead people! King-Glory is ready to enter. 8 Who is this King-Glory? God, armed and battle-ready. 9 Wake up, you sleepyhead city!  Wake up, you sleepyhead people! King-Glory is ready to enter.  10 Who is this King-Glory? God-of-the-Angel-Armies: he is King-Glory.  -Psalm 24 (The Message)

38 “Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!”[a]

39 But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!”

40 He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!” -Luke 19:38-40

Seeking God for our City (Day 39)

Seeking God for His Lordship to be welcomed by the nations.

9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!
Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your king [a] comes to you,
righteous and having salvation,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
and the war-horses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River [b] to the ends of the earth. -Zechariah 9:9-10

PRAY:

  • that the eyes of many nonbelievers would see God in our city.
  • that the church would go after the ones who aren’t yet going after God.

Seeking God for our City (Day 38)

Seeking God to instruct the peoples in His ways.

2 In the last days
the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established
as chief among the mountains;
it will be raised above the hills,
and all nations will stream to it.

3 Many peoples will come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
to the house of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways,
so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion,
the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. -Isaiah 2:2-3

Seeking God for our City (Day 37)

Seeking God for Christ to gather the nations in worship.

Let this be written for a future generation,
that a people not yet created may praise the LORD :

19 “The LORD looked down from his sanctuary on high,
from heaven he viewed the earth,

20 to hear the groans of the prisoners
and release those condemned to death.”

21 So the name of the LORD will be declared in Zion
and his praise in Jerusalem

22 when the peoples and the kingdoms
assemble to worship the LORD. -Psalm 102:18-22

Seeking God for our City (Day 35)

Seeking God for Christ’s followers to be at peace with all people.

7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” -Jeremiah 29:7

27“But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. -Luke 6:27-28

PRAY:

  • that God’s heartbeat would be heard by those who disbelieve or mock Him.
  • that Christians would be empowered to love their enemies.
  • that God would strengthen and encourage the hearts of the persecuted around the world.

Seeking God for our City (Day 34)

Seeking God to be exalted in difficult times.

I will shake all the nations, and the treasures of all the nations will be brought to this Temple. I will fill this place with glory, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 9 The future glory of this Temple will be greater than its past glory, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. And in this place I will bring peace. I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!” -Haggai 2:7-9

Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. 8 But all this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come…14 And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations[a] will hear it; and then the end will come. -Matthew 24:7-8, 14

PRAY:

  • that these difficult times would become the church’s finest hour.
  • for God to strengthen underground churches around the world with boldness.
  • for people in our city to turn to Christ during perilous times.

Seeking God for our City (Day 33)

Seeking God to bring forth peace among peoples.

3And He shall judge between many peoples and shall decide for strong nations afar off, and they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. -Micah 4:3

21And in and on His name will the Gentiles (the [a]peoples outside of Israel) set their hopes. -Matthew 12:21

PRAY:

  • that squabbles and alienation between ethnicities in our city would be overcome by the Prince of Peace.
  • that Christ would be revealed as the only hope for the deep-seated anger and hostilities that rage between people.

Seeking God for our City (Day 32)

Seeking God for worship from every nation.

27-28 From the four corners of the earth
people are coming to their senses,
are running back to God.
Long-lost families
are falling on their faces before him.
God has taken charge;
from now on he has the last word. -Psalm 22:27-28

23A time will come, however, indeed it is already here, when the true (genuine) worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth (reality); for the Father is seeking just such people as these as His worshipers. -John 4:23

PRAY:

  • for citywide worship events to draw together believers from many churches as never before.
  • that extravagant worship of God would resound through the city.
  • that the Father would find what He is seeking: many new worshipers in our city.

Seeking God for our City (Day 31)

Seeking God for entire cities to seek the living God.

20 This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Many peoples and the inhabitants of many cities will yet come, 21 and the inhabitants of one city will go to another and say, ‘Let us go at once to entreat the LORD and seek the LORD Almighty. I myself am going.’ -Zechariah 8:20-21

“…the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?” -Matthew 21:10

PRAY

  • that your city would be stirred with curiosity about Jesus.
  • for movements of people seeking Christ to erupt in your city.
  • for skeptical or doubting friends to seek God.
