One day after the election and everyone has an opinion and everyone has a reaction. My response is first of all—when I got up this morning God was still in charge; the kingdom of God is still intact; the church is still the instrument of God to be salt and light to the world. We tend to put too much emotion and energy into the results of political decisions. Every four years we get the privilege of choosing our president and as I have said before that is one of the most sacred things that our founding fathers left to us. We should work with all of our heart to get those elected who represent our biblical world-view. But once they are elected they are our leaders and must respected as such. Our role as believers never changes. We are still to be actively involved in our primary responsibility, which is the Great Commission. No matter who becomes president our role still remains the same.
The citizens of America have spoken as to their desire to place Sen. Obama in the White House as our first African-American President. That is an amazing and a truly historic accomplishment. Personally, I congratulate him and wish him well. As he soon takes office our role as believers is to support him through continual and on-going prayer. That is the command out of 1 Timothy 2. Let’s make him the most prayed for President ever. The challenges that he faces are unprecedented and actually rather frightening. He deserves our prayers and our encouraging support. Once he enters the office of the President he is no longer just a Democratic candidate for president but he is my President and your President.
Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. (1 Timothy 2:1-2)
Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. (Romans 13:1)
Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors…Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the King. (1 Peter 2:13, 14. 17)
Scripture is quite clear about our duty to civil government. We are to pray, honor, submit, and subject ourselves to our appointed leaders. In doing this we bring glory to God and His kingdom.
I have some very strong convictions and values that I still maintain and will still promote. I can continue to champion them and also remain respectful to whoever is in office. This is the mandate which Daniel so ably represented in the biblical account in which he never was adversarial to the king but always appealed his desires and his counter offers to the king. As a result of his respect and honor for the king and because of his favor given to him by God he was promoted as a leader in Babylon. I believe there are some young leaders that God wants to promote into positions of leadership in our country no matter who is in charge or which political party is in control. Our leader is King Jesus and it is not a political matter but a kingdom matter. Favor rests in the hands of God not in the hands of man. God will raise up whoever he wants at whatever time he wishes.
Let us believe that this will be the greatest hour for the church. Let’s continue to pray, evangelize, love others, and be the dynamic Christians that epitomized the first century believers.
Last of all I think it would be good for all of us to honor President Bush as he will soon leave office. Many have disagreed with his policies and have not only said so but in very disparaging ways have mocked and ridiculed him. I have grieved over this kind of treatment that he so graciously deferred and did not react to. We should never maliciously ridicule dignitaries nor wish them evil. Our role as believers is to set another example that would lift them up not tear them down. May he be blessed of God in a very special way as he has led this nation the past eight years over rocky and rough terrain and never wavered no matter what assaulted him. God bless you President Bush. May you experience a blessed and fruitful life and may the seeds of your selfless serving turn into a bountiful harvest of divine rewards. Thank you for giving the best of your years in helping to steer this country through perilous waters.
